Award-Winning Radio Personality-Author Garrison Keillor Returns to the CCPA on Fri., September 29, 8:00 PM
CERRITOS, CA – One man, one microphone. Best-selling author Garrison Keillor brings an evening of stand-up, storytelling, audience song, and poetry to the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts (CCPA) on Friday, September 29, 8:00 PM. Tickets start at $35.
In GARRISON KEILLOR TONIGHT, the bestselling author-satirist explores the beauty of growing old, complete with sonnets, limericks, and musical jokes. With mistakes and big ambitions behind you and nothing left to prove, old age brings the contentment of “less is more,” when small things give you great pleasure because that’s what’s left.
Cheered as one of the best storytellers ever, Keillor’s “sense of what makes a good tale is keen,” hails the Denver Post. “He improvs cannily into different directions, sometimes because he can tell how the audiences is reacting; other times because of his own awareness that the plot is getting rich.”
The Minnesota native began his radio career at the University of Minnesota. He worked for Minnesota Public Radio and hosted the first broadcast of A Prairie Home Companion in St. Paul. The program aired for 40 years, with Keillor winning over legions of fans – and critics – by sharing his engaging and hilarious anecdotes about life. Surrounding the fictitious Minnesota town Lake Wobegon and its hardworking residents and their old-fashioned values, the broadcast boasted more than 3 million listeners on more than 500 public radio stations.
A frequent contributor for Time Magazine, Keillor has won a George Foster Peabody Award, a National Humanities Medal from the National Endowment for the Humanities, and a 1987 Grammy for “Best Spoken Word or Non-Musical Recording” of the popular Lake Wobegon Days. In 1994, he was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame at Chicago’s Museum of Broadcast Communications.
Keillor has written dozens of books, including the bestselling Lake Wobegon Days, The Book of Guys, The Old Man Who Loved Cheese, Love Me, and Boom Town (a Lake Wobegon novel). His other works include the memoir That Time of Year; a book of limericks; and Serenity at 70, Gaiety at 80, offering reflections on why you should keep on getting older.
Keillor played himself in the 2006 movie adaptation of A Prairie Home Companion, directed by Robert Altman and featuring Meryl Streep, Lily Tomlin, Woody Harrelson, John C. Reilly, and Tommy Lee Jones.
